Learn About the 2010 Census

The Decennial Census collects data every 10 years about households, income, education, homeownership, and more for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the island areas. The data is used for apportionment of the seats in the House of Representatives. Check for the release date of various 2010 Census data products here.

Learn About the American Community Survey

The American Community Survey (ACS)  collects and produces population and housing information every year instead of every ten years like the Decennial Census. Collecting data every year provides more up-to-date information throughout the decade about the U.S. population at the local community level. About three million housing unit addresses are selected annually, from across every county in the nation. Access most current ACS data here.

Learn about the Population Estimates Program

Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, it is the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program  that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities and towns and estimates of housing units for states and counties.
