CHAIRMAN SAMUEL J. PARKER, JR. APPOINTED TO MARYLAND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH COMMISSION
UPPER MARLBORO, MD - Samuel J. Parker, Jr., AICP, Chairman of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), was recently appointed by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to represent the Washington Metropolitan Area on the Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission.
Created and enacted earlier this year by the Maryland General Assembly, the Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission is charged with assessing and advising on the progress of State, regional and local planning in Maryland in achieving the goals of the State economic growth, resource protection and planning policy.
Parker has served as Chairman of the Planning Board since 2006. He has more than 25 years of professional planning experience - particularly in the areas of historic preservation planning, and community revitalization and redevelopment. His career includes service as Associate Director for Community and Business Development of the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority, planner and Acting Division Chief with M-NCPPC, and in a variety of planning positions with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Metropolitan Washington Planning and Housing Association, and Mount Pleasant Home Center, Inc. Parker holds a bachelor’s degree from Catholic University of America and a master’s degree in regional planning from Cornell University. “I am honored to accept this appointment,” said Parker. “I look forward to sharing the benefits of M-NCPPC’s experience in carrying-out a number of award-winning planning projects, including the Envision Prince George’s community-wide visioning initiative, and helping Maryland leverage its position as a national leader in creating a sustainable approach to development throughout the State.”
Parker is joined on the Commission by Rollin B. Stanley, Director of M-NCPPC’s Montgomery County Planning Department, and Derek P. Berlage, former M-NCPPC Chairman and currently Director of the Department of Land Use and Growth Management for St. Mary’s County.
