The Central US 1 Corridor Sector Plan and Sectional Map Amendment (SMA) follow an 18-month planning process established by the County Council in 2005. The 18-month process consists of 8 months for plan development and 10 months dedicated to the public hearing and plan approval process.
The consultant team, led by Cunningham | Quill Architects, began talking to residents, workers, property owners, county agencies, local and county politicians, and other key stakeholders in July 2008. These conversations continued throughout the planning process, culminating in a six-day development and design charrette that incorporated several opportunities for public input to produce a plan for the future development and design character for the US 1 Corridor and adjacent areas.
Following the charrette and refinement of the consensus plan, the team has drafted the preliminary sector plan/SMA. This document will be presented during a Joint Public Hearing with the Planning Board and County Council, which provides an opportunity for the community to comment on the recommendations of the preliminary plan.
This process will be open, transparent, and innovative. Opportunities to leverage the technology available to the Planning Department and consultant team will be aggressively pursued, particularly with regard to public participation and outreach.
