What's NewMeeting and Event Summaries To further student involvement in the planning process, the Prince George’s County Planning Department, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Council and the Prince George’s County Community Foundation, conducted a design competition for Bowie State University students to design the cover of the sector plan. All part- and full-time, undergraduate and graduate Bowie State University students were eligible to participate. The designs were judged based on their: - Embodiment of the spirit and vision of the plan. - Creativity. - Visual composition. A committee comprised of Councilmember Ingrid Turner, Chairman Samuel Parker, and members of the project team selected the top submission – designed by Samantha Key, a junior majoring in visual communication and digital media arts.
On January 12, 2009, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) conducted a briefing for the City of Bowie City Council on the Bowie State MARC Station Sector Plan. The briefing was recorded and is available on-line . Pre-charrette M-NCPPC held the Bowie State MARC Station post-charrette on January 13, 2009. Over two dozen residents, business owners, and BSU faculty and staff provided valuable input and feedback on the preliminary illustrative site plan and project recommendations. M-NCPPC conducted the Bowie State MARC Station pre-charrette on September 18, 2008, at Bowie State University. Approximately two dozen residents, stakeholders, and Bowie State faculty, staff, and students attended the presentation and question and answer session to learn about the planning process and share how they envision the development of the area over the next 10-15 years. The presentation is available on-line here. Elected officials who attended the event included Councilwoman Ingrid Turner and Delegate Gerron Levy.
Bowie State University Information Booth M-NCPPC staffed an information booth at Bowie State University's Weisman Centre September 23, 2008, to disseminate information on the Sector Plan, publicize upcoming events, and distribute student surveys.
CharretteM-NCPPC conducted the Bowie State MARC Station charrette from September 30, 2008, through October 3, 2008, at Bowie State University. The Bowie State MARC Station charrette was an intense multi-day collaborative planning process during which stakeholders and the M-NCPPC team constructed a preferred design concept for the project area. The charrette started with a student question and answer session and a kick-off presentation on September 30 followed by an open house on October 1 and final presentation on October 3. Residents, business owners, and BSU students, faculty, and staff provided input and feedback throughout the week as the design team worked to materialize the concept plan. Over 95 stakeholders participated in the charrette. They helped to shape four design and development alternatives that ultimately led to the creation of the preferred design concept. This concept will be futher refined during the upcoming months and presented to the public at the Post-charrette scheduled for December 2008. The final charrette presentation highlighting the illustrative preferred design concept along with key transportation, housing, economic, and environmental recommendations is available on-line .
