Purple Line The Purple Line is a proposed high-capacity public transportation link between Bethesda and New Carrollton. This 14-mile corridor extends from the western limits of the Metrorail Red Line in Bethesda to the Orange New Carrollton Metrorail Station along a route inside the Capital Beltway. The project would provide a direct connection between the Metrorail Red, Green, and Orange Lines that radiate into suburban Maryland from Washington, D.C., and provide an east-west public transportation link between Montgomery County and Prince George's County. Currently the Maryland Transit Administration is refining alignment alternatives and addressing computer modeling challenges that will forecast ridership. Environmental studies associated with each alignment are currently underway, with selection of a final alignment anticipated in June of 2008.For more information on the Purple Line, please visit the Purple Line project website here or contact the project manger below.
County Transportation Plans to Address the Purple LineBoth Montgomery and Prince George’s County are undertaking planning projects to address the Purple Line. These two county, functional master plans will provide policy guidance for the Purple Line location, mode (i.e., bus or light rail), function, and general operating characteristics for communities between Bethesda and New Carrollton, including the Takoma/Langley Crossroads. Information and contacts for each county plan are below. 1.) Purple Line Functional Master Plan—Montgomery County The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) of Montgomery County has recently started the development of a Purple Line Functional Master Plan.
What area is covered? Current adopted master plans include an alignment for a trolley over the Georgetown Branch alignment between Bethesda and Silver Spring. The Functional Master Plan, once adopted will provide for planning policy guidance over an alignment extending from Bethesda to the County boundary with Prince George’s County in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads area.
2.) Countywide Master Plan of Transportation—Prince George's County The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) of Prince George’s County has recently started the Countywide Master Plan of Transportation. The Purple Line will be added to the Countywide Master Plan of Transportation, which would officially place the Purple Line in a master plan for Prince George’s County. This plan will begin in September 2007 with anticipated completion date of September 2008. The Master Plan, once adopted will provide for planning policy guidance over an alignment extending from the County boundary with Montgomery County in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads area to New Carrollton.
