Illustrated Inventory of Historic Sites
This
illustrated inventory provides a brief description and photograph of
each of Prince George's County's designated Historic Sites, as well as
of the Broad Creek Historic District. The 226 Historic Sites exemplify
Prince George's County's rich architectural heritage, serving as the
visual evidence of our ties to the past. These properties have been
determined to meet the architectural or historical criteria of Prince
George's County's Historic Preservation Ordinance (Subtitle 29 of the
County Code) and are protected by the Historic Preservation Ordinance.
The Broad Creek Historic District was established in 1985, and is the
County's first Historic District.
The County's Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is charged with the
protection of Historic Sites and Historic Districts listed in the
County historic preservation plan, the Historic Sites and Districts
Plan. It reviews applications for building permits; it comments on
development applications, and it assists historic property owners with
information and contacts.
Sixty of the County's 226 Historic Sites are listed in the National
Register of Historic Places, including three properties within the City
of Laurel. The Laurel properties are included only for reference
purposes since Laurel has its own planning and zoning powers and
historic district ordinance. The three Historic Sites within the City
of Laurel are indicated by a square (.). Archeological sites are
included, without photographs.
