Presentation Description:

Currently, much of the Prince George’s County Planning Department is focused on Purple Line development, bus/rapid transit options for various corridors, a special pedestrian access study to explore the complete street concept. A comprehensive presentation of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) policies and tools would help our planners write better local government policy and educate county residents.

Objective:

Provide background for TOD market demand, benefits of TOD, and overview of strategies and tools to implement. Specific areas of focus for presentation:

  • Insights and strategies for success in delivering high-performing TOD.
  • What roles do the public and private sectors need to catch the next market cycle?
  • Where does phasing and transit readiness fit into preparing for TOD?
  • Best practice examples (what, how, where different passenger rail applications operate)
  • The planning strategy and tools for evaluating the feasibility of passenger rail systems and what type of passenger rail systems work in what type of built environment conditions.
  • What can local governments do to move toward TOD?
  • What are some opportunities through federal policy?
