Creating a 21st Century County

Discussion Summary: Planning for future growth within the county does not happen without the coordination and partnership with other local-serving government entities. This agency discussion will provide an overview from the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority which is the principal development and redevelopment entity of the county, with a focus on mixed-income, mixed use, and mixed tenure in targeted communities. The agency also focuses on the development and preservation of workforce/affordable housing near transit centers. This discussion will enhance the current collaborative relationships between planning agencies and implementation agencies.

The seasoned planner will come away with knowledge of the revitalization and redevelopment process that demonstrates a keen understanding of current smart growth, sustainability, and economic development principals. Mr. Ways will expound on the mission of the Redevelopment Authority. Some of the recent projects such as the Gateway Arts and Entertainment District, the Suitland Redevelopment, and Palmer Park will be featured in the discussion. Some of the accomplishments of the Redevelopment Authority, such as construction of a new elementary school in Suitland and demolition of obsolete housing to make way for future development, will be discussed as a way to clarify the process for bringing economic development and new, affordable housing to the county, including to the Developed Tier inside the Capital Beltway.

Note: The Speaker Series is open to the general public. Please feel free to share with any interested email lists, colleagues and/or friends.
