There are a number of initiatives in the county—ranging from policy changes to outreach and education efforts—that are making this a priority and ongoing discussion among county and state agencies. The Street Smart Campaign is one of those efforts sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board. The campaign is in its eighth year. It is aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian and bicyclists injuries and deaths in the Washington Metropolitan area.
