Preserving Sites of Suffrage Activism
2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied on the basis of sex. With many local governments and community organizations seeking to identify local historic sites associated with the women’s suffrage movement, this program will highlight the challenges and opportunities in the preservation of these sites of activism. The discussion will include Maryland’s history of suffrage activism, the omission of women from state and local inventories of historic sites, and the complexity of commemorating a movement which left African American women behind.
