M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Announces Thanksgiving Community Events
Riverdale, MD - The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County today announced two donation programs for local families around Thanksgiving. They include “Trot for a Turkey” and “Sustainable Giving”.
November 21, 2020
The Department is hosting its 8th Annual Trot for a Turkey in Watkins Regional Park from 5 – 8 pm. Share the gift of giving this season and help families in need by running or walking through the beautiful Winter Festival of Lights. For more than 30 years, visitors to the annual Winter Festival of Lights have been dazzled by twinkling light displays as they drive through Watkins Regional Park. This year, register to walk or run through the almost 3-mile course and see the dazzling displays up close.
The event supports hundreds of families each year and 100% of the proceeds support families in need by purchasing turkeys and hams. Many families kick off the fall/winter season by participating in this magical event and once-a-year opportunity to walk through the Festival of Lights. For more information, please contact the Park Ranger Office at 301-627-7755 or register here.
November 23, 2020 and December 1
The Department is partnering with Amerigroup for Sustainable Giving at Seat Pleasant Activity Center from 3 – 7 pm, providing families with traditional thanksgiving meals or a crockpot and gift card to help prepare their own meal. Amerigroup has donated 50 traditional family meals through the Share program as well as funds for the purchase of crockpots, dry goods and gift cards to provide to families.
In the season of giving, the Department partnered with Amerigroup to donate items that can support families for years to come. Families can choose between a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings on November 23 or a crockpot with dry goods for a holiday inspired meal and gift card for perishables on December 1. Registration will open mid-November at ParksDirect.
