Suitland Water Tower Art Banner Project
Make your Mark in Suitland
The Prince George’s County Planning Department is seeking qualifications from an artist or artist team to lead a collaborative public art opportunity with a cohort of visual arts students from the Suitland community. Through mentorship with the selected artist or artist team, the youth artist cohort will design 8 prints that will be produced in a series of banners for installation on the Suitland Water Tower.

The selected artist or artist team will collaborate with students in a series of 6* studio sessions, biweekly from April 8th through June 10th, to conceptualize, produce, and finalize artworks in a format suitable for banner fabrication. The chosen artist or artist team must demonstrate proficiency in community engagement through artmaking and/or co-creation practices involving community stakeholders, and candidates should ideally provide examples of prior successful co-design experiences that incorporated community input.
The artist will be supported in this effort by M-NCPPC staff. The artist will be retained for support during the banner fabrication and installation process, which will be managed within a separate contract, to ensure proper file transfer, artwork compatibility, and to weigh in on final production details.
The Artist’s anticipated scope of services includes:
- Mentor youth artists who are designing the 8 banners for the water tower
- Support co-creation and co-design efforts with the youth artists to achieve a cohesive, complimentary visual experience
Provide guidance to youth artists as they develop and refine concepts
Set up digital files in preparation for transfer to the youth artist’s designs for digital reproduction
Meet with M-NCPPC and other members of the project team as needed

Suitland Sketches
Renderings and Sketches
The Suitland Cultural Arts Implementation Strategy will build upon the Prince George’s County Cultural Arts Study. Its primary objective is to identify ideal locations for creative placemaking. The Strategy will also craft conceptual designs tailored to each location’s unique characteristics and community needs.
To ensure the success of these recommendations, the Strategy will analyze each proposal, identifying any barriers to implementation while also assessing their connections to local neighborhoods and available resources. This approach aims to address existing challenges and leverage assets to maximize impact.
Moreover, the Strategy will actively engage community members and stakeholders through a series of stakeholder interviews and design workshops. These workshops serve as platforms for education, enlightening participants about the principles of placemaking and the power of cultural arts in fostering vibrant communities.
In addition to conceptualizing these improvements, the Strategy will develop a maintenance plan. This plan will outline strategies for the upkeep and utilization of the proposed improvements, ensuring their sustained benefits for the community over time.
